Bertazzoni Freezers DOOR UNIT OPEN Error: Freezer door left open
What Does Door Unit OPEN Mean? The Door Unit OPEN alarm appears on Bertazzoni freezer columns — including Professional Series and Master Series built-in freezer columns — when the door has been left ajar for more than a few minutes. Unlike a refrigerator, a freezer loses its cold very rapidly once the door seal is […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Stop storing frozen food until the door can be fully sealed. A freezer door that does not close and seal correctly will allow continuous temperature rise and risk complete thaw of stored items within hours.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Closing the door fully and achieving a proper gasket seal clears the alarm automatically. No manual reset is required.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Door alarm reactivates within minutes of a confirmed full-close, Gasket is visibly torn, permanently deformed, or has detached from the door frame.
Symptoms You May Notice
Frost and cold vapour visible escaping from the door gap
Cold vapour or frost crystals are visible at the door edge, and warm moist air entering the compartment creates a visible condensation plume. Items near the front of the freezer may develop surface frost from the humidity differential.
Interior temperature begins rising within minutes of door opening
A freezer loses cold faster than a refrigerator because the temperature differential with room air is far greater. Even a partially open door for 10–15 minutes can raise the interior temperature enough to begin softening frozen goods near the opening.
Continuous audible alarm until door is fully closed
After several minutes ajar, the door-ajar sensor activates the buzzer continuously. The alarm cannot be silenced while the door remains open — closing the door is the only way to stop it.
Possible Causes
Contents protruding past the shelf lip
Tall items — boxes, bags, or containers — stacked above the maximum fill height or overhanging the shelf edge contact the door interior and physically prevent it from closing fully against the gasket.
DIY PossibleWorn or damaged door gasket
The magnetic gasket around the door perimeter has cracked, compressed flat, or pulled away from the groove, so the door sensor registers an open condition even when the door appears shut.
DIY PossibleLoose or bent door hinge
A loose hinge pin or bent hinge bracket causes the door to hang at an angle. On heavy panel-ready freezer doors the door will swing back open rather than remaining closed, triggering the sensor.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Rearrange or remove the obstructing contents
Open the door fully and scan the front edge of each shelf for items that overhang the shelf lip or sit above the maximum fill height. Rearrange them and close the door firmly.
On Bertazzoni freezer columns the maximum fill height is marked on the side wall of the interior — keeping contents below this line prevents most door-obstruction alarms.
-
2
Test the gasket seal
Place a sheet of paper between the door gasket and the cabinet frame, close the door, and try to pull the paper out. Repeat at four points around the perimeter. Resistance at all points confirms a good seal.
Clean the gasket with warm soapy water before the paper test — grease and ice residue reduce magnetic holding force and can mimic a worn gasket.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Alarm persists immediately after closing the door firmly — door-ajar sensor or sensor wiring may have failed
- Door hinge is visibly bent or the door face does not sit flush with the cabinet even after content rearrangement
