Bertazzoni Dishwashers E9 Error: Stuck button detected

What Does E9 Mean on a Bertazzoni Dishwasher? Good news — E9 is one of the most benign fault codes your Bertazzoni dishwasher can display. It simply means the control board detected a button that appeared to be pressed continuously for more than 30 seconds. This could be a physically stuck button, a moisture or […]

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. E9 is a low-severity fault with no safety hazard. If the lock-release sequence clears the code and buttons respond normally, the dishwasher is fully safe to use. If a button is physically stuck and cannot be freed, arrange service before running further cycles.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Try the panel-lock release sequence first (see your manual). If that doesn't work, power-cycle at the circuit breaker for 60 seconds. Either approach will clear E9 if the underlying button is no longer stuck.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: A button is visibly cracked or broken and cannot spring back, E9 returns immediately on every power-on, suggesting the membrane is delaminated.

Symptoms You May Notice

One or more panel buttons feel stiff or won't spring back when pressed

A button stuck in the depressed position is the most direct physical sign of this fault. Pressing surrounding buttons may feel normal, but the affected button has no travel or rebound.

Dishwasher beeps repeatedly when nobody is touching the panel

The board interprets the stuck button as a continuous press and may generate repeated alert tones, or the display flashes E9 without any user input.

E9 appears on display; machine won't accept program selections

While E9 is active, normal button presses are ignored or misinterpreted. Program selection and Start do not function until the stuck button condition is cleared.

Possible Causes

1

Moisture or detergent residue behind membrane button

Splashed water or detergent can seep behind a membrane-switch button and act as an adhesive, holding the button dome against the contact. A gentle clean around the button perimeter often resolves this quickly.

2

Control panel membrane delaminating internally

Over time, the adhesive layer bonding the membrane overlay to the button dome plate can delaminate, causing the membrane to press against a contact independently of any user input.

3

Accidental 30-second button hold (software lock)

Bertazzoni dishwashers include a panel-lock safety feature — holding certain buttons for 30 seconds intentionally triggers a lockout. E9 may simply indicate this lock was accidentally activated by leaning against the panel.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Try the panel-lock release sequence

Consult your model's user manual for the panel-lock release sequence. On most Bertazzoni dishwashers, holding the Start/Reset button (or a designated lock button) for 3–5 seconds deactivates the lock mode. The display should return to normal.

The panel-lock release sequence varies by series. On Professional Series models check page 14 of the user guide. On Heritage and Master Series, it is typically a 3-second hold of the lock icon button.

  2. 2

Clean around each button with a dry cloth

Run a dry microfibre cloth firmly around the perimeter of each button, pressing gently to dislodge any detergent residue or moisture. Pay extra attention to any button that feels stiff or shows reduced travel.

A cotton bud (Q-tip) can reach tight gaps between button edges and the panel surround. Do not use water or spray cleaners directly on the panel.

  3. 3

Power-cycle to clear the E9 fault flag

Cut power at the circuit breaker for 60 seconds. Restore power and check whether buttons move freely and respond normally. Attempt a test cycle.

If E9 clears and does not return, the fault was a one-off — likely an accidental panel lock or a transient moisture issue that has dried out.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • E9 recurs consistently after cleaning and power-cycling
  • One button is physically sunken or has no tactile response
  • Panel membrane shows visible bubbling or lifting around button areas
