Bertazzoni Wine Refrigeration / Wine Cellars DOOR OPEN Error: Wine column door left open
What Does Door open Mean? The Door open alarm appears on Bertazzoni wine columns — including the Professional Series and Master Series built-in wine storage columns — when the glass door has been left ajar for more than approximately 60 seconds. Wine column doors seal in a carefully controlled temperature and humidity environment. An open […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Maybe. Once the door is properly closed the alarm clears and wine storage resumes normally. If the door cannot be reliably sealed due to a gasket or hinge fault, humidity and temperature management are compromised and the cabinet should be serviced before long-term storage continues.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Closing the door fully and achieving a proper seal clears the alarm automatically. No manual reset is required.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Door alarm reactivates within a minute of closing with contents repositioned, Gasket is visibly cracked, compressed flat, or has detached from the door groove.
Symptoms You May Notice
Cork tops of bottles near the door feel slightly tacky or dried, and humidity inside the cabinet drops noticeably
A wine column door open to room air disrupts the carefully maintained humidity balance inside the cabinet within minutes. Bottles stored near the door are first affected — cork tops may feel drier than usual on close inspection during an extended open-door event.
Cold air spills from the door gap and cabinet temperature rises steadily
Cold dense air flows out from the base of the open door while warm room air enters at the top, causing both zone temperatures to drift upward. On a warm day the effect is especially rapid.
Audible alarm sounds continuously until the door is closed
After approximately 60 seconds with the door open, the buzzer activates and continues until the door is fully closed and the magnetic gasket seals against the cabinet frame.
Possible Causes
Bottle neck or label protruding past the shelf edge
A bottle placed with its neck overhanging the shelf lip contacts the door interior when closed, creating a gap along the gasket that the door-ajar sensor registers as an open door.
DIY PossibleWorn or damaged door gasket
The magnetic gasket around the glass door perimeter has cracked, compressed, or partially detached from the door frame, preventing an airtight seal even when the door appears fully closed.
DIY PossibleHinge tension reduced or adjustment screws loose
Wine column glass doors rely on hinge spring tension to self-close. If the tension has reduced or the adjustment screws have worked loose, the door will swing back open rather than remaining closed, continuously triggering the sensor.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Check bottle positioning on each shelf
Slide each shelf out and verify that all bottle necks are fully within the shelf boundary and no label protrudes past the front shelf edge. Reposition any offending bottles and close the door firmly.
Champagne and Burgundy bottles have wider shoulders — they need slightly more clearance at the shelf front than standard Bordeaux bottles.
-
2
Test the gasket seal with a piece of paper
Place a sheet of paper between the door gasket and the cabinet frame at four points around the perimeter, close the door, and try to pull the paper out. Resistance at all points confirms a good seal.
Clean the gasket with a damp cloth before the test — grease and residue reduce magnetic holding force and can mimic gasket wear.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Alarm returns immediately after confirmed full-close with no obstructing bottles — door-ajar sensor or hinge adjustment required
- Glass door face does not sit flush with the cabinet surround, indicating a hinge fault needing professional realignment
