Bertazzoni Built-In Appliance Power Surge Protection Notice

Installing Bertazzoni built-in appliance surge protection at the whole-home level is one of the most cost-effective steps a homeowner can take to protect the sophisticated electronic control boards in every Bertazzoni Professional, Master, Heritage, Italia, and Modern Series appliance. Modern built-in appliances contain microprocessor-based control systems that are significantly more sensitive to voltage transients than the electromechanical appliances of previous generations.

Why this matters

Power surges originate from multiple sources: utility grid switching, lightning strikes on nearby distribution lines, large motor loads cycling on and off within your home, and even HVAC compressor startup. A surge lasting only a few microseconds at elevated voltage can degrade or destroy the control board of a refrigerator column, wall oven, dishwasher, or induction cooktop — damage that is often not covered under manufacturer warranty because it is classified as an external electrical event. A properly rated service-entrance surge protective device (SPD) can absorb the vast majority of surge energy before it reaches your appliances.

Warning signs

  • An appliance displaying error codes or becoming unresponsive immediately after a storm or known grid event
  • Multiple appliances exhibiting unusual behavior at the same time, suggesting a common electrical event
  • A burning or ozone smell from an appliance that was functioning normally before a power outage and restoration
  • Flickering display panels or touchscreen controls that do not respond correctly after a power interruption

Inspection schedule

Have a licensed electrician inspect your home’s main panel surge protective device annually, and replace it after any confirmed surge event — SPDs sacrifice themselves to protect downstream equipment and must be replaced after significant surge absorption. If your home does not currently have a service-entrance SPD, arrange installation before the next storm season.

What to do

  1. Contact a licensed electrician to assess whether your main electrical panel includes a UL 1449-listed Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device rated for residential service-entrance installation.
  2. If no SPD is present, request installation of a whole-home device rated at a minimum of 40kA per phase. This is the single most important step for protecting built-in appliance electronics.
  3. Do not rely on power strip surge protectors for built-in appliances — these devices are not connected to hardwired appliances and provide no protection for refrigerators, ovens, or dishwashers on dedicated circuits.
  4. After any power outage and restoration, wait two minutes before checking appliance function to allow control boards to fully initialize on stable voltage.
  5. If an appliance displays abnormal behavior following a power event, contact Bertazzoni North America at 1-866-905-0010 before attempting to reset or continue using the appliance.

When to call a technician

Control board damage from a power surge may not be immediately evident — corrupted firmware or damaged capacitors can cause intermittent failures that appear days or weeks after the event. If you suspect surge damage to any Bertazzoni appliance, a factory-trained technician can perform control board diagnostics and determine whether a board replacement is required before the appliance is returned to service.
