The BlueStar wall oven igniter fire recall (CPSC Recall 13-117) was announced in July 2013 by Prizer-Painter Stove Works, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall covers BlueStar brand gas wall ovens sold through specialty kitchen appliance dealers. Note: this recall affects BlueStar-branded wall ovens only. It is included here as a category-level advisory for owners of professional gas wall ovens, including Bertazzoni wall oven owners, because igniter failure leading to gas accumulation is one of the most significant hazards in any professional gas oven system — and early detection matters.
Hazard
The gas igniter in the recalled BlueStar wall ovens can fail to ignite the burner on the first attempt. When this occurs, unburned gas can accumulate in the oven cavity. If the igniter subsequently fires — or if the oven door is opened with accumulated gas present — the accumulated gas can ignite suddenly, posing a fire and burn hazard to the consumer.
Affected units
- Brand: BlueStar (manufactured by Prizer-Painter Stove Works, Inc.)
- Recall number: CPSC 13-117
- Product type: Gas-fired wall ovens (professional-style, single and double configurations)
- Sold through: Specialty appliance stores and kitchen equipment dealers in the United States
How to identify
BlueStar wall ovens carry the BlueStar name badge on the front control panel. The model and serial number label is located on the inside of the oven door frame, visible when the door is open. For any professional gas wall oven — including Bertazzoni — the model and serial number are on a label on the inner door frame or on the side panel accessible from inside the cabinet cutout. Owners should test their oven igniter by listening for a rapid click and watching for burner ignition within 4 seconds of turning the control knob.
What to do
- BlueStar wall oven owners should contact Prizer-Painter Stove Works at 800-449-8691 (9 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, Mon–Fri) or visit bluestarcooking.com for recall remedy information
- If your gas wall oven — any brand — fails to ignite within 4 to 5 seconds of the control being turned on, turn the control to OFF and wait at least 5 minutes before attempting to re-ignite, with the oven door open or the kitchen ventilated
- Never attempt to ignite a gas oven with a match or lighter if the igniter has already attempted to fire — accumulated gas is present
- Schedule an annual igniter inspection for your gas oven; igniters weaken with age and a weak igniter is the primary cause of gas accumulation events
- Bertazzoni wall oven owners experiencing ignition delays should call 1-866-905-0010 before continuing to use the appliance
Urgency level
High for BlueStar wall oven owners — contact Prizer-Painter Stove Works immediately. Moderate ongoing advisory for all professional gas wall oven owners including Bertazzoni — any oven that fails to ignite promptly should be serviced before further use.
